MBNA America relies on RTMG to re-engineer its credit card legacy system

The Challenge

As MBNA's credit card issuance business ramped up, its legacy systems for clearing credit card applications couldn't meet its 24-hour turnaround requirement. With rapidly rising volumes, turnaround times through the credit card clearing engine began to approach twice as long as the desired goal.

The Solution

RTMG re-engineered MBNA's credit card clearing engine, converting it from the legacy VSAM database & COBOL language to DB2, and from the VMS operating system to Unix. As a result, turnaround times went from 47 hours to only 1½. This enabled MBNA to grow its business even further.

Background

MBNA has grown from a small regional credit card issuer to the largest independent credit card issuer in the world. The company maintains its international headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware and has operations throughout the United States and in Canada, Ireland, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Standard & Poor's reported that MBNA had the best five-year annualized return of any bank in the S&P 500. CIO magazine named MBNA one of the top 100 companies in the United States for the excellence of its management and strategic use of technology.
